About 3-Share or Multi-Share Healthcare Plans
While providing basic health benefits adequate for most individuals, TexHealth plans are not conventional insurance. Focused on wellness, primary and preventative care, the plans will not provide comprehensive health coverage and do not assume the full risk for all of a member's healthcare needs. In addition, the coverage and the provider network are limited.
TexHealth plans are called 3-share or multi-share plans as they split the costs of coverage for lower-wage employees between the employee, employer and public or philanthropic funding sources. Shared costs make coverage affordable enough to attract and maintain the enrollment of employees. By sharing the financial responsibility for the program, each party — employer, employee and the community — has a stake in making the program successful. Developed using innovative ways to provide lower cost health benefits, each regional TexHealth plan will be unique to the community it serves.
